What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?
ACT is a talking therapy which combines mindfulness-based strategies and acceptance to support people to reduce the influence that difficult thoughts, feelings, images and memories have upon their lives. It does this by supporting people to connect with their core values and use this to guide meaningful behavioural change.
Working collaboratively the therapist aims to support people to move in the directions of their values and to increase the choices available to them when experiencing difficult feelings.

Often when we have had difficult experiences we may work hard to try and avoid anything that can remind us of it, or to avoid difficult thoughts and feelings that come up or to tightly control these things. Whilst this avoidance and/or control can lead to short term relief it can get in the way of the things we want in our lives. ACT aims to help people develop a different relationship with their memories, thoughts and feelings which can lead to an improvement in mental wellbeing.
