What is Eye Movement Reprocessing and Desensitisation Processing (EMDR)?

EMDR is a comprehensive psychotherapy that helps you to process and recover from trauma and other distressing past experiences. It involves using side to side eye movements or other forms of stimulation combined with talking therapy to activate the brain’s natural healing processes. It does not remove negative memories but allows them to be processed so that the emotional impact of them is reduced.

EMDR is a structured therapy typically delivered in weekly sessions. It aims to help you process the negative images, emotions, beliefs and body sensations associated with traumatic memories that seem to be stuck. These stuck memories can often contribute to a range of mental health problems and EMDR has been proven to be effective in the treatment of PTSD, anxiety, depression and panic disorders.
