Theraplay®

Theraplay® is an attachment focused therapy that promotes playful connection, enhances attachment, self-esteem , trust in others and joyful connection.  It is based on natural patterns of playful, healthy interactions between children and their carers. Caregivers are actively involved in the sessions with the child supported by the therapist. Parent review sessions help to adapt playful tasks from in session, to changes that can be made in the home or school environment. Assessments are undertaken initially to develop a package of support that is the right pace and fit for each child and targets key areas of attachment functioning.

It can be helpful for all children, young people and families to promote relational engagement. It can be particularly helpful for children who may have had adverse childhood experiences such as trauma. It is often used with children who are fostered, adopted or in Special Guardianship placements. It is also helpful for children with additional needs including those with regulation difficulties (such as managing strong emotions), it can help develop confidence in children who are anxious, it is helpful with children who have issues of neurodiversity.

Our Theraplay® practitioner is fully certified and registered with Theraplay® UK and The Theraplay® Institute. She is currently training to be a Theraplay® supervisor. She has additional training in the Theraplay® informed By Your Side Model, which supports children and carers with transitions.
